Exhibition Catalogue
Many horse owners paint their equine’s hooves before a big show. There is some debate about what shows require this amount of care (regionals or just nationals) and which polishes are best (clear Ultra Hoof Polish or Twinkle Toes). Still, this act of preparation resonates with the absurdity and anticipation involved in a large group exhibition.
Painted Hooves features work from a combined cohort of sixteen graduating with an MFA in Studio Art in 2022. After two or three years spent navigating a pandemic existence, one that involved a lot of zoom and few in-person gatherings, this cohort has come together to put their work into conversation.
Through wide-ranging practices and media—sculpture, video, painting, drawing, papermaking, photography— these artists engage across wide ranging subjects — with landscape, infrastructure, history, family, astrology, and technology — to create, with care, precise and often dissonant works in dialogue.
